In virtual reality, you’re immersed in an artificial, digital environment, where you can explore and interact with your surroundings like you would in the real world. A little bit like in Matrix, but not yet that advanced.
To achieve the immersion, virtual reality headsets are used. A headset produces a stereoscopic image that makes everything look 3D. The headsets also have additional hardware for head tracking, enabling you to move your head to observe your environment.
- You need a modern smartphone; the minimum requirement is Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) or iPhone 5.
- Go to Amazon.com and buy one of the Google Cardboard headsets ($10+).
- Download FreeVRPlayer from Google or Apple app stores.
- Sign-up to Naughty America trial membership ($1.95 USD / 3 days).
- Download videos and enjoy the virtual reality experience!
Google Cardboard
Google Cardboard is the cheapest way to try virtual reality. For less than $20, plus a smartphone, you can experience what virtual reality has to offer.
Basically, Cardboard is just a piece of foldable cardboard with lenses attached. Putting it together is simple and it works. It really does! I’ve used mine for a couple of months now.
You can find a number of different Cardboard models on Amazon.com. I would recommend choosing one which has a strap; keeping the headset in place with your hands is not fun in the long run.
